Scar Tissue Massage

Supporting Healthy, Mobile Scar Tissue

Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process following surgery, injury, or trauma. As a scar develops, collagen fibers can form adhesions that cause the scar and surrounding tissues to feel tight, firm, sensitive, numb, or less mobile.

Scar massage and tissue mobilization use specialized manual techniques to gently work with the scar and surrounding tissues, helping improve mobility and flexibility while reducing the feeling of tightness and restriction.

At Beni Massage & Wellness, each session is customized to the location, age, condition, and sensitivity of your scar.

Potential Benefits

Scar massage may help:

  • Improve scar and surrounding tissue mobility
  • Reduce the feeling of tightness, pulling, or restriction
  • Soften areas of firm or thickened scar tissue
  • Reduce scar sensitivity or hypersensitivity
  • Improve flexibility of the tissues surrounding the scar
  • Reduce adhesions between layers of tissue
  • Support comfortable movement around the affected area
  • Improve the overall texture and pliability of healing scar tissue

Scar massage cannot erase a scar, and every scar heals differently. However, manual scar massage is commonly used as part of scar care to help keep healing tissue mobile and flexible.

What to Expect

Your therapist will first assess the scar and surrounding tissue before determining which techniques are appropriate.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

Gentle scar massage — Working directly over and around the scar to encourage tissue mobility.

Skin and fascial mobilization — Gently moving the layers of tissue around the scar to address areas of restriction or adhesion.

Myofascial techniques — Addressing tension in the surrounding fascia and tissues that may contribute to a feeling of tightness.

Desensitization techniques — Gradually introducing touch and movement to areas that have become overly sensitive or uncomfortable.

Pressure will be adjusted throughout your session based on your healing stage, comfort, and the condition of the tissue.

Post-Surgical Scar Care

Scar massage may be incorporated into recovery following procedures such as:

  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • Breast surgery
  • C-section
  • Liposuction
  • Body contouring
  • Orthopedic procedures
  • Other surgical procedures resulting in healed scars

Your surgeon’s instructions always take priority. If you are unsure whether your scar is ready for massage, please consult your surgeon or healthcare provider before scheduling.

Contraindications & When to Postpone Treatment

Scar massage should NOT be performed over an area that has not fully healed.

Please postpone treatment if you have:

  • An open wound or incision
  • Scabbing or active wound drainage
  • Signs of infection, including increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or fever
  • Active bleeding
  • Significant inflammation
  • A recently reopened incision
  • An acute injury to the area
  • Unexplained or rapidly increasing swelling
  • Severe or worsening pain

Massage over an open or incompletely healed wound can interfere with healing and may increase the risk of reopening the wound or infection.

Please Inform Your Therapist Before Your Appointment If You:

  • Recently had surgery or a procedure
  • Are taking blood-thinning medication
  • Have a history of abnormal or problematic scarring
  • Have a diagnosed bleeding disorder
  • Have recently experienced an infection or complication related to your surgery
  • Have a medical device or implant in the treatment area
  • Have been instructed by your surgeon to avoid massage or pressure

Certain medical conditions and medications can affect whether massage is appropriate, so your therapist may recommend medical clearance when necessary.

Important for Post-Surgical Clients

There is no universal timeline for when scar massage should begin. Recommendations vary depending on the type of surgery, location of the incision, closure method, healing progress, and your surgeon’s protocol. Some medical guidance recommends beginning once the wound is fully healed, while other surgical protocols allow gentle scar care earlier under appropriate guidance.

If you are receiving scar massage following surgery, we recommend following your surgeon’s specific instructions and obtaining clearance when appropriate.

Your Healing Is Unique

Every scar—and every body—heals differently. Our goal isn’t to force or aggressively manipulate the tissue. We work progressively and respectfully with your body’s stage of healing to support comfortable, healthy tissue mobility.
