Microblading Care Guide: Pre-Care, Aftercare & Healing

Proper care before and after your microblading procedure is essential to achieve natural, long-lasting results. Following these steps will help your brows heal beautifully and maintain their color and shape for months to come.

Microblading Pre-Care

Preparing for your appointment can make a big difference in how well your brows heal and how the pigment sets. Please follow these instructions to ensure the best results.

Weeks Before Your Appointment

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen (check with your doctor first).
  • Stop supplements like vitamin E, fish oil, or omega-3s at least 1 week prior.
  • Discontinue topical products on the brow area, including Retinol (Vitamin A), AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), BHAs (beta hydroxy acids).
  • Avoid cosmetic treatments near the brow area for at least 2 weeks, including Botox, Chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, Laser treatments.

Days Before Your Appointment

  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake (avoid completely 24 hours before).
  • Avoid sunburn and direct sun exposure for at least 1 week.
  • Do not pluck, wax, thread, or tint your brows — let your natural brow hairs grow.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water (but avoid excessive caffeine).

On the Day of Your Appointment

  • Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup, lotion, and brow products.
  • Do not work out before your appointment (sweating opens pores and affects pigment retention).
  • Eat a light, healthy meal beforehand to avoid feeling lightheaded.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and allow enough time for your session.

Important Notes

  • If you are pregnant, nursing, or have certain medical conditions, microblading may not be suitable. Please consult with your technician.
  • Notify your artist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications you are taking.
  • Proper preparation will help your skin heal smoothly and improve pigment retention.

Microblading Aftercare

Aftercare is crucial for proper healing and pigment retention. During the first few days, your brows may appear darker and slightly swollen—that’s normal. Keep the area clean and dry, applying any recommended ointment lightly and sparingly. Avoid touching your brows with unwashed hands, and skip makeup, sweating, or hot environments that could irritate the area.

As your brows begin to heal over the next one to two weeks, gentle cleaning is okay, but never scrub or pick at scabs. Scabbing and flaking are natural parts of the process; resist the urge to peel anything, as this can remove pigment and cause uneven results. During this time, avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms, and harsh skincare products on the brow area. Light sun exposure is fine, but daily SPF is highly recommended to prevent fading.

The Microblading Healing Process

The healing process typically lasts six to eight weeks, and your brows will go through several phases:

  • Initial phase (first few days): Brows appear darker than expected, and you may notice slight redness or tenderness. This is normal and will fade as the skin begins to settle.
  • Scabbing and flaking (days 4–10 approx.): Small scabs form and begin to fall off naturally. Color may look patchy, and itching is common—avoid scratching.
  • Color settling (weeks 2–4): Brows may appear lighter and some areas may seem to have “disappeared.” Gradual color return occurs as your skin fully heals.
  • Final results (weeks 4–8): True color and natural-looking strokes emerge. By the time of your 6–8 week touch-up appointment, you can accurately assess your final results.

Long-Term Microblading Care & Maintenance

To keep your brows looking their best long-term, daily sunscreen is essential. Avoid applying retinoids, exfoliating acids, and harsh chemicals directly on the brow area, and remove makeup gently. Powder-based makeup is preferable over creams, and always let your aesthetician know you have microbladed brows before any facial treatments.

Touch-ups are typically needed 6–8 weeks after the initial procedure, with maintenance every 12–18 months to keep the pigment vibrant. Remember, oily skin and lifestyle factors like sun exposure can affect how long your brows last.

Common Mistakes to Avoid After Microblading

  • Picking or scratching scabs
  • Getting brows wet too soon
  • Using too much ointment
  • Exercising or sweating heavily during healing
  • Sleeping face-down
  • Applying harsh skincare or makeup to the brow area
  • Skipping your touch-up appointment

Following these guidelines helps ensure your brows heal properly and the pigment lasts as long as possible.

When to Contact a Professional

Reach out to your microblading professional if you notice:

  • Excessive bleeding or swelling
  • Signs of infection (redness, warmth, pus, or unusual discharge)
  • Severe pain not relieved by over-the-counter medication
  • Scabs that do not form or won’t fall off
  • Unexpected color changes, scarring, or raised areas

Most issues are minor and easily resolved if addressed early, so don’t hesitate to ask for guidance.

By preparing well, caring for your brows during healing, and following long-term maintenance advice, you’ll enjoy beautiful, natural-looking brows for months. Healing takes time, so be patient and trust the process!
